Purpose of Scouting

The purpose of Scouting is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

The scout method provides an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training based on the Promise and Law,  It's best seen when young people are:

  • Enjoying what they are doing
  • Learning by doing
  • Participating in varied and progressive activities
  • Making choices for themselves
  • Taking responsibility for their own actions
  • Working in groups
  • Taking responsibility for others
  • Taking part in outdoor activities
  • Sharing prayer and worship
  • Making and living their promise

Family camp - Friday 15th - Sunday 17th May

A weekend full of fun with special emphasis on our 80th Anniversary.

We invite anyone to camp with us who has or has had a connection to G40 (or G7/11 or BRAVE or 11th Lewisham North). As this is a family camp, children will have to be accompanied by their parent(s) or join with another family.
For letter & booking form see - link
For suggested camp kit kist see - link

If you cannot camp with us we hope you will still be able to join us on the Saturday when we are planning some special team games on the afternoon followed by a barbeque and finishing with a campfire singsong.

It will be necessary for any adults (over 18's) who want to join us on this camp to have completed a CRB disclosure form and been cleared beforehand. See below.

This evening we will be presenting a Chief Scout's Gold Award as well as other badges and awards.

The Beaver, Cub & Scout of the Year will be announced.

We will provide the burgers, sausages and rolls (including vegie ones if asked for), and ask you to provide the nibbles, salad and snacks to go with the cooked food.

If you would like to let Conway know what you will be bringing it will be added to the lists below so we can avoid too much of one thing and too little of another, thank you.

Annual General Meeting

During this evening (about 7:30pm) we will also have a formal few minutes for the Annual Meeting of our Group Council.

This is your chance to show your support for the Leaders. There will be an opportunity to discuss the progress of our Scout Group (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) - a brief look at the past year and then looking ahead to the next.

You may even consider joining the Group Executive Committee. If you might be interested, please speak to me or one of the other leaders, preferably beforehand.

Weather allowing we will arrange for the younger children to be occupied in the field.

Membership of the Group Council

  • All parents
  • The Adult Leaders and Section Assistants (formerly Helpers)
  • The Patrol Leaders
  • Others (not included above) who may have been invited because of their role in the group as Administrators or Advisers
  • Former Scouts and their parents who may have been invited to remain part of the Group

Recycle print cartridges

We are collecting empty print cartridges (only inkjet but not Epsom). This is being organised by Greenwich District towards the cost of a new district headquarters.

They would like you to bring cartridges into meetings with you or if you have lots at work that are not already recycled, perhaps you would be able to have a collection box there. Arrangements can probably be made to collect the box from your workplace. Do let Conway know so he can pass the message on.

Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers

Greenwich District are collecting Active Kids Vouchers from Sainsbury towards some equipment to be used by the district.

Please bring your vouchers to meetings with you and we will pass them on.

Membership Payment

The summer term's subscription of £25 is now overdue. Please remember this is a membership fee NOT an attendance fee. It is due whether your son or daughter attends regularly or not.

Cheques to "40th Greenwich Scout Group" or cash in an envelope marked subs with the name on it.

Gift Aid

It would help us if you could complete and sign a Gift Aid form so that we can recover the tax paid (currently at 22% as a special concession to charities.) This increases the value of your Subscription payments from £25 to £32. (An extra £2,000 per year if everyone signs up and all for a little bit of paperwork!)

Our Group Scout Leader, Conway Tearle has a supply of declaration forms (They only take a minute to fill-in). Please speak to him if you want a form or you have any other queries.

More about Gift Aid and a form see link

Uniforms wanted

We have requests from time to time for second hand uniform items.

We all know that children grow out of their clothes often before they are worn out. It is good to recycle these if we can so can we ask that any outgrown uniforms be passed to our leaders and we will make sure that good use is made of them.

CRB and Disclosure Applications

Any adults (over 18's) who want to join us on outings, at camp or even to help regularly at meetings must have completed a CRB disclosure form and been cleared before doing so. Please speak to our Group Scout Leader, Conway if you need a form.

More about the CRB & completing a Disclosure Application Form see link
